Boston Scientific transformed a 33,000 SF historic World War I-era building at Austin’s Penn Field into a state-of-the-art R&D, testing, and training facility for endoscopic surgical tools. The project combines adaptive reuse with highly technical construction, preserving the building’s exposed wood structure while creating specialized laboratories, manufacturing, training, and office spaces designed to support innovation and future growth.
The project includes a complete interior demolition and build-out featuring under-slab MEP trenching, a new roll-up door and storefront system, and complex “box-within-a-box” construction to achieve required fire ratings. High-end finishes, specialty ceilings, acoustical panels, operable partitions, locker rooms, and extensive equipment installations further enhance the facility. Executed on an aggressive fast-track schedule, the project requires close coordination with the owner’s commissioning agent, rigging teams, and trade partners to navigate ongoing design evolution while maintaining progress and positioning the facility for future expansion.
